Usually the first dance item in a Bharathanātyam, recital, the alarippū is a abstract dance item that begins with movements of just the eyes, and then progressively involves more of the body and increase the rhythmic pace. It symbolizes awakening, sanctification of the performing place, and dedication of the dancers’ body to the divine to start the performance. No meaning is expressed in this purely decorative number.
