One of the Carnātic music trinity, Muthuswāmi Dhīkṣhitar was a master of the Thāḷa system. He is the only composer to have krithis in all the seven basic Thāḷas of Carnatic Music. For their Rāga Bhāva, grandeur of the Sāhithya and philosophical content, Muthuswāmi Dhīkṣhitar’s krithis remain unsurpassed. Dhīkṣhitar composed some 40 songs in a western style called ‘Nottuswara’. He also composed group krithis such as the Ṣhōdaśha Ganapathi Krithis, Panchalinga Sthala Krithis, Navagraha Krithis, Kamalāmba Navāvarṇa Krithis and many more. He composed a total of 450 to 500 krithis, most of which are in Sanskrit. His compositions are noted for their integration of North Indian musical nuances and for gamakas reflecting the vīṇā style of playing.
