Vedanth Bharadwaj

Music is my passion and I have been fascinated with it for as long as I can remember. My quest in music started early, around the age of 4, when I started training in Carnatic classical music. For the last five years, I have been a student of both Hindustani and Carnatic classical music, under the acclaimed vocalist and teacher Sri Ramamoorthy Rao. I have travelled through various genres of music, western and Indian, and I have always come back to the Indian classical forms.

I find our system of music to be an endless ocean - the more I learn, the more I feel there is to learn, it is a most humbling experience. I consider myself very fortunate that my guru, family, and friends have made this journey possible by supporting and encouraging me to reach my destination. Words are not enough to express my gratitude.

Praveen Kumar: Art runs in his veins

http://www.narthaki.com/info/intervw/intrvw99.html

Praveen Kumar of Bangalore, one of the best male dancers in Bharatanatyam currently, dances with the most unbelievably perfect nritta. The opening “Mahadeva Shiva Shambho” with Natesa Kavutvan passages strung into the choreography, had stunning impact. The jatis in the Krishnaanjali in Reetigowla had a razor sharp clarity of line and rhythm,………………………..

Leela Venkatraman – The Hindu, Delhi (May 13th 2011)

Tailored to perfection…………… Praveen Kumar's Bharatanatyam, in the style of his guru, was one of the high points of the festival. One of the high points of the Music Academy Dance Festival was the recital by young Praveen Kumar of Bangalore. The uncluttered simplicity and immaculate Bharatanatyam was in the style of his Guru Prof. C.V.Chandrasekhar. Praveen's masterly rendition made it one of the finest presentations of the festival.

Leela Venkatraman – The Hindu, Chennai (February 4th 2011)

in his focus on Mysore Vasudevachar's compositions, after the invocatory ‘Sri Madadi Tyagaraja' in Kalyani, showed his mastery over nritta. The Kamalamanohari ‘Karumai Kushalam' piece depicted Devi's graceful walk with toe/heel/ crossed feet rhythmic gaits. The Khambodi tana varnam “Akhilanda koti brahmam' had its high points in visualising creation in quick flashes.

-Leela Venkatraman- The Hindu, Chennai (Sept., 10th, 2010)

it was Bharatanatyam of an unusual flavour during the week. Praveen Kumar from Bangalore, held the audience at the Habitat enthralled with the Abhogi varnam “Ennai marandanalo ninaindu urugum”, From the starting trikala jati to the nritta passages in the charanam execution by Praveen were praiseworthy. The impeccable dance profile, coupled with enriching bhava, made the centrepiece of the recital memorable.

-Leela Venkatraman – The Hindu, (delhi) May 1 , 2009

Forays into the Unusual…………… clean lines, clear foot work & impeccable finishes. He captured the context with sensitivity especially in the charanam sahithya when described the physical beauty of the nayika..Praveen’s nritta shone with accuracy. The sparkling theermanas set with nadai bedams In some cases with doubling speeds as in the opening trikala jathi were intoned with authority.

-Rupa Srikanth – The Hindu. December 19, 2008

Praveen’s sleek lines and agile footwork combined with a serenity of countenance and gave a pleasing look to his recital. the dancer managed to show the anguish of the sensitive man without losing clarity of mudras.

-Anjana Rajan- The Hindu(delhi), July 18, 2008

“Vibes of Pandharpur, after R. Krishnaswami’s introduction, were well caught in Praveen Kumar’s recital. In a narrative inclusive of dialogue, with the dancer effecting quick changes of head-gear and other little details, donning one role after another, Praveen never lost control over measured aesthetics of both nritta and interpretative dance. ..The dancer’s nritta with its immaculate sarukkai adavus was a delight.”

- Leela Venkataraman (‘Devotion in delightful contours’ - The Hindu, Aug 10, 2007)

“Noteworthy abhinaya and graceful dancing by the young and talented Praveen kept the audience spellbound throughout the show.”

- India Monitor (New York)

“This young dancer has considerable skill coupled with grace and beauty in movements as well as a confident approach in the execution of technique. Neat lines, firm footwork, graceful hasta delineations and a pleasant portrayal of the different narrations by the dancer, created a calm, leisurely atmosphere that is becoming a rare feature in the present dance scene.”

- Nandini Ramani (‘Combines skill and grace’- The Hindu, Feb 21, 2003)

Textbook Bharatanatyam at its best…….. Praveen's selection of items for the NCPA event showed his imagination and ingenuity. His perfect adavus and mudras were straight from the textbook. Endowed with a winsome personality he is a dancer to the manner born.

- A.Seshan (www.narthaki.com)

“Praveen proved to be a sincere student of Bharatanatyam at his Rangapravesha. “Nritta” seemed to be his forte.”

- The Times of India

“That he is an experienced dancer was evident in the manner he went through the numbers. His ‘nritta’ and ‘nrithya’ were a treat to the eyes.”

- The Hindu

“He performed with confidence and revealed good grounding.”

- Deccan Herald

“Praveen Kumar as ‘Purandara Dasa,’ portrayed the characters convincingly. The gestures and expressions registered tellingly on the receptive viewers.”

- The Indian Express

…an impressive show of talent and skill, revealing an innate sense of aesthetics amplified further by rigorous training and single-minded effort. Adavu execution was precise, including the series of ‘mandi adavu’ that featured in a theermanam. In the padam, Praveen made a sensitive sketch of Krishna’s impatience at being taken so lightly by a nayika. The bhakthi laden composition from Muruga’s life was portrayed with involvement & conviction.”
- The Horizons (‘Sincere effort from a young aspirant - P. Praveen Kumar’)

“Bending the gender barrier…… Praveen’s vibrant nritta and expressive abhinaya through which his ability to bring out the beauty of the raga and bhava in music gave a divine lustre to his dance.”

- The Vijay Times

Vijna Vasudevan

Gifted with fluid grace, an innate sense of rhythm and a vibrant sense of expression, Vijna was formally initiated into the world of Bharathanatyam since the surprisingly young age of three and a half years. Entranced by the movements of this south Indian classical dance form as a little girl, Vijna has followed her calling with single-minded vision, rigorous training and above all, a passion for the craft. Today, she is an accomplished upcoming danseuse in the Kalakshetra tradition of Bharathanatyam, and has been enthralling audiences both in India and Abroad. Vijna's love and practice of her art has brought her much personal satisfaction and public recognition. Her lucid expressions and talent have earned her acclaim from several critics too. Good rhythmic command, great felicity of expression and pleasing stage presence are her forte.

Vijna commenced her training in Bharatnatyam under Smt. Sujatha Chandramohan (disciple of Adyar.K.Lakshmanan) in Muscat , Oman . Since 1996, she has been training under the world renowned dance couple 'The Dhananjayans' at Bharata Kalanjali, Chennai. Vijna is presently the Director of Dhwani, a leading Bharathanatyam school in Chennai which has come into existence as a result of the combined thoughts of her dance partner and Artistic Director of Dhwani, Renjith Babu. Ever since its incorporation in the year 2002, Dhwani has been imparting Bharathanatyam classes to young children and has delivered several mind blowing performances for social and corporate gatherings which have won numerous hearts across the city. Each and every performance is a blend of authenticity and modernity. A topper in academics, Vijna has preferred to devote time to dance, though several professional courses were within her reach. She is a Visual Communication graduate from M.O.P Vaishnav College , Chennai and has successfully completed her masters in Bharathanatyam at Madras University , Chennai. What began as a childhood fascination has matured into lifelong quest for Vijna to seek the essence of Bharathanatyam as embodied in the play of Bhava, Raga and Thala.

CREDENTIALS

“Vijna Rani Vasudevan , a disciple of the Dhananjayans, presented a Bharatnatyam recital at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan that stood out for adherence to tradition and correctness of technique. A special mention must be made of her conjuring up the serene expression for Rama for every refrain. Rama acquiring divine weapons from Viswamitra, his departure to the forest, the meeting with Jatayu were some examples of scenes that were portrayed adroitly. The difference in body language and facial expressions between Hanuman and Vaali was commendable. The dancer's powerful nritta and full use of the stage space conveyed situations and characters clearly and without overlapping.” - Vidya Saranyan, THE HINDU

“Vijna Rani Vasudevan is a very good ambassador for this school of Bharatanatyam . A charming dancer, her performance was a pleasure to watch. Vijna Rani performed them with stability and precision. Vijna rani’s hand positions and postures, even in the basic natyaramba, were balanced and aesthetic. Her 'thi thi thais' were also strikingly neat. Her depiction of the lovelorn maiden was studied and the abhinaya was appropriate” – Usha Ramdas, THE HINDU

“Chennai-based Bharatanatyam dancer Vijna Rani could be safely claimed as the find of the festival. A final year student of visual communication, this disciple of the world famous dancing couple - the Dhananjayans – danced with effortless ease and mesmerized the audience with her neat movements and emotive expressions.”  - Shyamhari Chakra, Delhi

“…Proved herself once again as the Dancing Queen of Muscat” - Times Of Oman

“Star Performer in the Keralotsavam (Kerala Festival)” - Times of Oman

“Unlike many dancers, her use of eyes, neck movements and stage movements seemed to be prominent and very spirited. The Danseuse maintained complete grasp of laya, speed and perfect all round stage movements along with her own enchanting stage personality.”  - S.V.R.R., News Today

Renjith Babu is an artist from South India who exemplifies the best in dance, yoga, and martial arts. He creatively mixes elements from each discipline to push traditional boundries and inspire immagination. Through his diligent study of dance, yoga, and martial arts Renjith has developed a scientific and spiritual understanding of the human body and its movements. He combines these traditions of yoga and martial arts with his modern artistic sensitivity to leave his audience inspired. Renjith's extreme command over his body movements and expressions allows his vision to translate seamlessly into remarkable performance. The perfection and stylistic accessibility of his performances are extolled not just by critics and connoisseurs, but also by audiences uninitiated with the finer points of the dance form.

His initiation into Bharathanatyam, the South Indian dance form, occurred at the age of 5, under the tutelage of Smt. Prasanna Prakash (Kerala, India). His inherent flair for the art led him to explore higher grounds at the world renowned Kalakshetra (Chennai, India) where he acquired his dance diploma in the year 2000. Soon after Renjith’s graduation, his talent and artistry were recognized by the Cultural Ministry, Government of India and he was awarded the ‘Outstanding Artist’ scholarship to continue studying Bharathanatyam. He began his advanced training under the veteran Guru. Prof. Sri C.V. Chandrasekhar and continues till date. Renjith is also extensively trained in Kalaripayattu, a beautiful martial art form of Kerala, at Hindustan Kalari (Kerala, India).

A Master Yogi and a practitioner of Yoga since 1996, his initial training in Yoga began in Kalakshetra and continued at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in Kerala and Tamil Nadu where he was conferred the title of ‘Yoga Acharya’ for having successfully completed the Advanced Teachers Training Course. Recently, Renjith had the unique opportunity to assist his Yoga teacher, Srivatsa Ramaswami in his work for his book called “The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga”. He was involved in the research of the effect of performing Vinyasa Yoga on body organs and functionality. Renjith was also photographed and featured as a Vinyasa practitioner in the same book. Renjith is also influenced by Pilates and is currently pursuing his interest in AcroYoga.

Renjith has been featured as the principal dancer in acclaimed dance productions of senior gurus such as Prof. C.V. Chandrasekhar and “The Dhananjayans”. He also has to his credit, lead roles in productions of Smt. Malathi Iyengar (Rangoli Foundation, L.A., USA) and Cleveland Cultural Alliance (Ohio, USA). Renjith’s portrayal of the characters he has played in these performances have achieved legendary fame and are consistently used as a benchmark by other performers.

In the year 2002, Renjith started his own dance training school in Chennai called DHWANI. At present he along with his dance and life partner, Vijna Vasudevan uses their multi-disciplinary approach to inspire students in identifying their mind-body connection. Renjith’s expertise has been enlisted by several dance schools in India, Australia and the United States where he has conducted both Bharatanatyam and Yoga classes at all levels of training. He is able to instruct students in varied aspects of Bharatanatyam including dance theory, mythology, rhythm construction and intonation.

An imaginative and vivid choreographer, Renjith’s creative works have been received with accolades the world over. His collaborations with leading artists have also resulted in the creation of some very widely appreciated productions. Renjith is representative of the small group of professional choreographers and dancers in the contemporary world of artists, who has the ability to electrify an audience with sheer creativity and dazzling movements.

CREDENTIALS

“Renjith is a born dancer developing his abilities with sincere efforts and dedicated approach to the art. It has been a pleasure teaching and working with him in my group productions and training him for his solo concerts. With a thorough training in Yoga, he brings perfection and new dimensions to his Nritta. His abhinaya is very involved and deep. His calibre to improvise on stage makes him stand out in a group. No wonder Renjith is in great demand as a guest dancer in many productions the world over.

His experience as a creative dancer on stage brings out his choreographic talents so much that while working under different choreographers he is able to contribute a lot to the final outcome of the choreography. As a teacher too, Renjith has been doing excellent work, paying attention to details while teaching. Performances by his students have brought laurels and credits to him.”
- Prof Shri C.V. Chandrasekhar

“His passion and dedication for dance is unsurpassed. Renjith is a talented dancer, teacher, Yoga specialist, and a choreographer. In all these years of our continued association, I have come to admire and appreciate his generosity and team spirit.

His most memorable work has been in my choreographic work ‘Punyakoti’, where he performed the role of Tiger with utmost authenticity and conviction. Renjith simply lived the character to its fullest. He performed the role of Patanjali with ease and incorporated Yoga based movements profusely. Renjith has been an asset to our company.”

".... Renjith is a quintessential dancer who represents the pure technique of Bharata Natyam... His dance breathes the restraint and subtleties so essential of the Kalakshetra style. His background in Kalari payattu, Yoga and Kathakali kernels out all the finest elements for a male dancer. His dance is so perfectly defined that it could serve as an ideal reference for a book on the basics of Bharata Natyam. His knowledge of music and rhythm is a great asset as a Nattuvanar and also in the execution of complex Jathi sequences.
