Foundation Course in Hastha Mudhrās

Did you know that you can represent a flag, scissors, flight of a bird differentiating a parrot from a peacock, waxing and waning of the moon, beak of a first, bracelet just with fingers of one hand? They are many more: Just by aligning your fingers you create a visual imagery. Our forefathers were genius communicators, not for them the pedestrian word alone. They knew to embellish with a few deft strokes.

Using hand movements you can communicate the ten avatharas (incarnations) of Vishnu: from a fish to a tortoise, boar to ferocity of half-lion, half-man, from the gentle Rama to the mischievous Krishna. Or using gestures indicate the nine planets of the Navagraha – from the seven Demi gods and two demons who move around the constellation and influencing our lives on earth. They hold many lessons: there is good and bad in every one of them, they are a team, and all in transition and movement.

Bharatanatyam gets you to the core of Indian philosophy: reading from books is one thing but you douse in the spirit when you sing and dance. In dance you learn to express emotions through gestures and movements – which is the nearest and closest thing for a dip in the ocean.
