Thattadavus are the basic footsteps that involve striking of the feet in Half-knee position (Aramandi). Students learn the basic Natyarambha position and learn to co ordinate the Hand gestures (Hasthamudhra), Hands, Eyes, Head, Neck and Torso movements for each of the footwork. Thattadavu consists of eight basic variations done in three different speeds. The students learn to sing all the eight Thattadavus in 3 different speeds set to a particular rhythmical pattern (Thala).
