Gītham is the word describing a song in particular and music in general, though the latter is more commonly referred to as Saṅgītham. The first set of songs with lyrics and notation in Karnātic music is the Gītham. Simple lyrics in many Rāgas (musical notes) and different Thāḷas (beats for rhythm) comprise this set. Gītham introduces the learner to the song format by making them go through Swaras (notes) Sāhithya (lyrics in this context) and also understand the Rāga and Thāḷa associated with the composition.
